To empower youth to transform their lives through psychological, emotional, academic and social practices.
Affirming YOUTh PEAS (Psychological, Emotional, Academic, Social) program uses project-based instructional models to improve academic achievement in reading, writing, mathematics, science, technology, engineering and the arts for youth 11-18 years old. Students participate in individual and collaborative projects in reading, writing and science workshops, arts enrichment in performing and visual arts, fitness, and character development activities. Families are also served through the establishment of a viable Community Learning Center to foster family wellness and life-long learning.
October 15, 2016, our program participant, 14-year-old, LaQuan Walton, was doing something that he loves--playing basketball at Buccaneer Park, when bullets from an AK-47 can raining down on him and others like hail. Unfortunately, LaQuan was shot in the knee.
That day, his life was forever changed. Doctors are attempting to save his leg so he could return to his passion. "Every week I have to do physical therapy and doctors' appointments. I wish I could get away from it all and just be a kid without all of the stress," says LaQuan.
Because of our generous supporters, we were able to grant him his wish by sending him on a trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando, FL. Yes, LaQuan, we too want you to have fun and remember the lessons of Let's Talk It Out - #ThinkB4Uact
